Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs

Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs
Studio description:
In Futurama’s latest and most tentacle-packed epic, space itself rips open, revealing a gateway to another universe. But what lies beyond? Horror? Love? Or maybe both, if it happens to contain a repulsive, planet-sized monster with romantic intentions! Nothing less than the fate of human and robot-kind is at stake as the Futurama crew takes on The Beast with a Billion Backs.

The Beast with a Billion Backs will be presented in widescreen format with English Dolby Surround 5.1, along with French and Spanish subtitles. Bonus features include:

The second of four direct-to-DVD adventures featuring the Futurama crew, The Beast with a Billion Backs picks up where its predecessor, Bender’s Big Score, left off while balancing multiple love stories and the arrival of a sexually voracious alien from another universe. Unlike Bender, the various story lines converge well here–the tentacled, Lovecraftian creature Yivo (voiced by David Cross), which wants to mate with the entire population of the universe at once, makes Fry (Billy West) its de facto leader (Pope, actually), which in turn plays havoc with his relationship with new girlfriend Colleen (Brittany Murphy). And Yivo’s scheme causes the people of Earth to evacuate the planet, leaving it in the hands of robots–which is, of course, excellent news for Futurama’s resident mechanical malcontent, Bender (John DiMaggio). Beast is probably best understood and enjoyed by longtime fans of the series, who will recognize and appreciate the countless “surprise guests” (Robot Satan, the Harlem Globetrotters, Bender’s hero Calculon, the head of Stephen Hawking), though the feature is certainly well-written and performed by its voice cast, and should provide plenty laughs for first-timers with flexible attention spans. Parents, however, should note that the humor can be fairly suggestive at times, and should exercise caution in regard to younger viewers.

Extras include a very funny commentary track with creators Matt Groening and David X Cohen, stars West, DiMaggio and Maurice LaMarche, and key members of the production team. Deleted scenes and a making-of featurette with the voice cast are entertaining, but the real features of value are Futurama: The Lost Adventure, which is culled from the Futurama game for Playstation 2, as well as a lengthy preview of the next direct-to-DVD movie, Bender’s Game. Suffice it to say that the Lord of the Rings weighs heavily on the storyline. — Paul Gaita

Customer Review: Decently done, but missing the old magic
Like another reviewer defined themselves, I’m not one of those people who thinks that the old stuff is better & the new stuff is bad. The first movie (Bender’s Big Score) was cute & enjoyable. This film is as well, but there’s just something missing from it.

The premise is that Bender’s constant jumping back & forth in time caused a rift in space, which is home to a rather strange alien being. Other plot points involve Fry’s disasterous attempt at dating as well as Amy’s “marraige” to Kif. BwaBB is cute, but it just doesn’t seem to really live up to it’s predecessor, Bender’s Big Score. I’ll give it 4 stars for the nostalgia & the entertainment value I got from watching it, but this just wasn’t as fun as I’d hoped it would be. Still, there’s one more movie to go… here’s hoping that it makes up for this one.

Customer Review: Fan of the show, not of the packaging.
While I didn’t care for this installment as much as I liked “Bender’s Big Score,” I still enjoyed having more adventures with the Planet Express crew.

It’s a shame that the packaging will utterly destroy my DVD before it gets watched two or three more times. In all, the movie has been viewed twice, and in removing it from and returning it to the cardboard sleeve it comes in, it is already significantly scratched.

If you’re buying this DVD, be sure you have a standard plastic case to put it in, or you’re throwing your twenty bucks away.

Still haven’t recieved it yet. How do you expect someone to rate something they don’t have?
Customer Review: 5 stars for style but 3 for assembly
We ordered the entire set and are very pleased with all the dining chairs and sofa, which all come as one piece, but the table requires assembly and was a real pain. One of the legs just couldn’t be properly screwed into the top so it’s a bit wobbly. But it’s still not bad for the price and it matches everything else — so what are you gonna do?

A Letter from Brian Selznick

Dear readers,

When I was a kid, two of my favorite books were by an amazing man named Remy Charlip. Fortunately and Thirteen fascinated me in part because, in both books, the very act of turning the pages plays a pivotal role in telling the story. Each turn reveals something new in a way that builds on the image on the previous page. Now that I’m an illustrator myself, I’ve often thought about this dramatic storytelling device and all of its creative possibilities.

My new book, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, is a 550 page novel in words and pictures. But unlike most novels, the images in my new book don’t just illustrate the story; they help tell it. I’ve used the lessons I learned from Remy Charlip and other masters of the picture book to create something that is not a exactly a novel, not quite a picture book, not really a graphic novel, or a flip book or a movie, but a combination of all these things.

I began thinking about this book ten years ago after seeing some of the magical films of Georges M?li?s, the father of science-fiction movies. But it wasn’t until I read a book called Edison’s Eve: The Quest for Mechanical Life by Gaby Woods that my story began to come into focus. I discovered that M?li?s had a collection of mechanical, wind-up figures (called automata) that were donated to a museum, but which were later destroyed and thrown away. Instantly, I imagined a boy discovering these broken, rusty machines in the garbage, stealing one and attempting to fix it. At that moment, Hugo Cabret was born.

A few years ago, I had the honor of meeting Remy Charlip, and I’m proud to say that we’ve become friends. Last December he was asking me what I was working on, and as I was describing this book to him, I realized that Remy looks exactly like Georges M?li?s. I excitedly asked him to pose as the character in my book, and fortunately, he said yes. So every time you see M?li?s in The Invention of Hugo Cabret, the person you are really looking at is my dear friend Remy Charlip, who continues to inspire everyone who has the great pleasure of knowing him or seeing his work.

Paris in the 1930’s, a thief, a broken machine, a strange girl, a mean old man, and the secrets that tie them all together… Welcome to The Invention of Hugo Cabret.

Yours,

Brian Selznick

Brian Selznick on a “Deleted Scene” from The Invention of Hugo Cabret

This is a finished drawing that I had to cut from The Invention of Hugo Cabret. I was still rewriting the book when I had to begin the final art. There was originally a scene in the story where this character, Etienne, is working in a camera shop. On one of my research trips to Paris I spent an entire day visiting old camera shops and photographing cameras from the 1930’s and earlier, as well as the facades of the shops themselves. I researched original French camera posters and made sure that the counter and the shelves were accurate to the time period. I did all the drawings in the book at 1/4 scale, so they were very small and I often had to use a magnifying glass to help me see what I was drawing. After I finished this drawing I continued to rewrite, and for various reasons I realized that I needed to move this scene from the camera shop to the French Film Academy, which meant that I had to cut this picture. I tried really hard to find ANOTHER moment when I could have Etienne in a camera shop, but, as painful as it was, I knew the picture had to go. I’m glad to see it up on the Amazon website because otherwise no one would have ever seen all those tiny cameras I researched and drew so carefully!

The Boy of a Thousand Faces

Customer Review: Bravo!
There was a frequent segue phrase used on Monty Python’s Flying Circus: “And now, for something completely different . . .,” and I feel like that this book fits that perfectly.

On one level, this is basically a mystery story about a twelve-year-old orphan boy, Hugo Cabret, who lives in a Paris train station in about 1930. As the story progresses, we discover, gradually, the secrets that led to him living alone and secretively in the train station, where he keeps all the clocks working well and on time. We also discover the secrets behind the lives of the old man who runs the toy shop in the station, Papa Georges, and of his goddaughter, Isabelle, and to a lesser extent, Hugo’s new friend, the one-eyed man named Etienne. Their secrets are interwoven, and the connecting and discovery of those secrets will have an impact on Parisian culture. What does the story have to do with magic, illusion, clock-making, complex mechanics, and the early history of film-making? Everything!

The story itself is done well, with interesting characters, a breath-taking pace, and a good degree of plot complexity, especially with how the secrets are gradually uncovered, and have fascinating interconnections and ramifications that stretch well beyond the characters. However, that is not what makes this book stand out.

What does move this book into the category of “And now, for something completely different?” The format! By topical genre, this book is a mystery, aimed at ages six to ninety-six, but the format, or presentation, is something I have never seen before. I have read books where illustrations are an important adjunct to the text. A good example is How to Keep Dinosaurs by Robert Mash. I have read good graphic novels, with The Hedge Knight - Second Edition [Graphic Novel] by George R.R. Martin being a prime example. The Asterix and Obelix books are good examples of comic books with enough mature connotations and subtexts that they appeal to some adults. I have not yet read, or viewed, The Arrival by Shaun Tan, which is a virtually textless tales of the struggles of an immigrant adjusting to a new culture, but The Invention of Hugo Cabret is not that, either, as text is an integral part of the story.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret is something else, yet again. Of its 525 pages, roughly 300 pages are beautiful illustrations, mainly complex, detailed pencil drawings by the author, Brian Selznick. Mr. Selznick was an illustrator before he became an author, and his skill and love for the visual medium sings loudly and clearly in this work of art. A typical sequence features a series of sequential drawings, perhaps covering seven or eight pages, presenting a key piece of the story, followed by an interlude of two to four pages of text, that often features dialogue and background history, presented by one or more of the characters, as they pry at, and unearth, and unravel each other’s interrelated secrets. Even the paper speaks of the author’s love of art, as it is all wood-free, woven paper, that is heavy and semi-glossy in texture. I would love to stroll throw a museum with this story, presented large, displayed upon the walls, probably underground, with dark and light areas, illumination-wise, and the hallways twisting and turning. If it were presented that way, many visitors would end up running through, as they get entranced by, and caught up in, this well-told story of tragedy, buried history, and triumph. They would want to devour it as fast as possible, and then run right back through.

– Chris McCallister, author of Coming Full Circle

Customer Review: Beautiful Pictures
I loved this book. The pictures were beautiful and the text was also good. I liked the way this book was mainly in picture format with some text here and there - to me it was a refreshing way to read a book.

There are also many different ways to interpret the pictures. If you take out all the text, the pictures could become a totally different story. I showed this book to one of my friends and he interpreted the story in a completely new and hilarious way.

This is an excellent vaccum I brought and works good. Before this I got fed up with Bissel and this removed all my worries.

Customer Review: Cheap, Light, Working
It’s a light vacuum cleaner with little power, but it’s cheap and working. Since it’s light, it’s not a problem for me to use it around the house, it did not take a lot of effort or energy to clean the house. I know it’s not that strong and doesn’t clean that well, but it is enough.

Customer Review: Great air mattress
The air mattress is very comfortable and easy to fill. You can close the valve without removing the air pump so you don’t loose any air pressure and it keeps the mattress nice and firm. When stacked it is very comfortable for a single person. The only drawback is the zipper that keeps the two mattresses together as a king size mattress. It does keeps them stuck together, but they do space apart somewhat. As is spaces apart you are drawn to that part of the mattress. I had to literally move my kids out of the crevase several times a night. However, the mattress was comfortable and easy to take down and roll up in it’s carrying bag.

Customer Review: versatile airbed
We purchased this for some car camping we plan to do this summer. The mattress seems well made and sturdy. The two halves can be independently filled and separated completely. So one person can move around without sending the other one flying.

We will see how well it holds up in the field but I am optimistic. I also purchased the rechargeable Coleman air pump which is noisy as hell but makes filling and deflating the airbed a minute job.

CorningWare 2-1/2-Quart Oval Casserole Dish with Glass Lid
Most of us have become masters of multitasking–answering phones, checking e-mail, and reading simultaneously, and Corningware follows suit with dishes designed for the microwave, oven, tabletop, dishwasher, and refrigerator. Corningware’s French White bakeware combines the functionality of classic designs with contemporary styling. This 2-1/2-quart oval baking dish is ideal for pastas, casseroles, or meats, and features a glass lid with an easy-to-grasp handle (but as with all Corningware and other ceramic or glass bakeware, you’ll always need to use potholders when handling the dish or its lid). The dish itself has no handles; however, its impressive 10-year warranty (one year on the glass lid) more than compensates for this shortcoming. –Ariel Meadow Stallings
Price: $14.99
Customer Review: Not the real McCoy
When I ordered this, I thought it was CorningWare. NOT. It is stoneware. A world of difference…stoneware is heavier and susceptible to temperature shock breakage. This may be made by “CorningWare” but it is not the original CorningWare ceramic; which, it turns out, is no longer available. The casserole is a nice size, but not the real McCoy.
Customer Review: Casserole Dish an important part of the kitchen
My wife wanted a large casserole dish to add to her kitchen cooking supplies. This CorningWare 2-1/2 Quart oval dish works perfect for her needs. Often, when you have guests coming, or are preparing food for a large group, you want prepare the food ahead of time - then just warm it at the last minute for serving. A casserole dish works great in many of these type of situations. Just stick it in the oven, and go about your other duties - the food will be ready when you are. Also, we’ve discovered that rice has a completely different texture when “baked” in a casserole dish in the oven as opposed to using a rice cooker or the boiling water method. One note of caution on this dish - it does not have handles or a large lip so handling it when hot out of the oven can be a problem. Also, the glass lid is not very secure on the top. Still, I recommend this for any who are interested in purchasing a casserole dish.

Customer Review: Excellent chimney for starting lots of coals
Took it to scout camp last week and was able to get enough coals for two 12″ ovens going in about 15 minutes. The coals up to the top of the side vent holes are ready in 10 minutes, the ones above the holes take a few minutes longer. Excellent value for the price.

Customer Review: Two observations…

1. The openings in the vertical grating at the bottom are too narrow to permit insertion of any butane grill lighter I have been able to buy. I have to lift up the canister in order to light the paper in the bottom.

2. After fiddling with newspaper trying to find right amount to use, I have found that using 1/2 of a paper grocery shopping bag (just cut it right up the middle with scissors) is perfect for lighting the chimney without fail.

    It’s Time
Michael Bubl?’s assured debut and the tireless year of globe-trotting touring he spent promoting it elevated the 20-something Vancouver native into the first rank of pop crooner revivalists. His sophomore studio follow-up largely turns on the same formula that helped make his considerable vocal prowess so attractive to mainstream audiences, mixing the nigh flawless, if expected Sinatra-channeling (”I’ve Got You Under My Skin”) with more playful and inviting renditions of pop standards like the Gershwin’s “A Foggy Day in London Town,” “Feeling Good,” “Try A Little Tenderness” and Cole Porter’s “I’ve Got You Under My Skin.” But it’s the eclectic mix of more contemporary material the singer seasons them with — apt tribute to Bubl? hero Bobby Darin — that keeps him walking the narrow tightrope between artistic intrigue (a blues-tinged vamp of Holland-Dozier-Holland’s “How Sweet It Is,” Leon Russell’s lovely “Song For You,” with a guest turn by Chris Botti) and the kitsch-laden abyss (”Quando, Quando, Quando”’s Euro-centric duet with Nelly Furtado, a ring-a-ding-fling with the Beatles’ “Can’t Buy Me Love” that echoes fellow Canadian crooner/rival Matt Dusk’s more successful flirtation with Lennon-McCartney). Arranger/producer Tommy LiPuma offers Bubl? a welcome swinging jazz showcase on “The More I See of You,” a bracing respite from the rest of producer David Foster’s slick, if typically bloodless MOR production. – Jerry McCulley [Note: A special edition including two bonus tracks–”Dream a Little Dream” and “Mack the Knife”–is also available.]

The 2006-2011 World Outlook for Tubular Metal Household Breakfast, Dinette, and Dining Tables Not Sold As Part of a Set
WHAT IS LATENT DEMAND AND THE P.I.E.?

The concept of latent demand is rather subtle. The term latent typically refers to something that is dormant, not observable, or not yet realized. Demand is the notion of an economic quantity that a target population or market requires under different assumptions of price, quality, and distribution, among other factors. Latent demand, therefore, is commonly defined by economists as the industry earnings of a market when that market becomes accessible and attractive to serve by competing firms. It is a measure, therefore, of potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) or total revenues (not profit) if a market is served in an efficient manner. It is typically expressed as the total revenues potentially extracted by firms. The ?market? is defined at a given level in the value chain. There can be latent demand at the retail level, at the wholesale level, the manufacturing level, and the raw materials level (the P.I.E. of higher levels of the value chain being always smaller than the P.I.E. of levels at lower levels of the same value chain, assuming all levels maintain minimum profitability).

The latent demand for tubular metal household breakfast, dinette, and dining tables not sold as part of a set is not actual or historic sales. Nor is latent demand future sales. In fact, latent demand can be lower either lower or higher than actual sales if a market is inefficient (i.e., not representative of relatively competitive levels). Inefficiencies arise from a number of factors, including the lack of international openness, cultural barriers to consumption, regulations, and cartel-like behavior on the part of firms. In general, however, latent demand is typically larger than actual sales in a country market.

For reasons discussed later, this report does not consider the notion of ?unit quantities?, only total latent revenues (i.e., a calculation of price times quantity is never made, though one

Customer Review: Lazy Susan Teak Table
The box arrived damaged. However, the table was in good condition and not damaged. The shipping company was great and checked as soon as they noticed the damage to the package. The table looks great especially once I treaded it with teak oil. Since I am not judging the shipping I give the tables look and feel a 5 star. I agree with the others that the packaging was not enough for such a heavy product.
Customer Review: Nice table - lousy packaging
The packaging of the Strathwood Whidbey Teak Dining Table with Double Lazy Susan was completely inadequate to protect the table from damage during shipping from China, then via UPS from the West Coast to Maryland. This table is over 70 pounds and padded only with small pieces of Styrofoam around the edges of the table, which simply cuts right through this flimsy padding during shipment. As a result, our table arrived with dents in one edge of the table top, a dent in the top and scratches on one of the legs. Additionally, one of the Lazy Susan pieces had been jarred free of its mount and was free to move about and damage the table top. Teak is heavy, yet fairly soft wood, easily dented by the extreme pressures resulting from shipping in a cardboard box turned on its edge. We sanded the table edge down to minimize the unsightly dents, but there was no way to sand the top slat that now has a permanent dent. Due to the difficulty of attempting to properly re-package this table, we have decided to keep it, but are very disappointed in the state of delivery. We certainly cannot recommend anyone purchasing this table, given the poor packaging.

The Help system also offers a smooth transition between the Help menu in the Microsoft Office system and Help on the Internet (when connected). Larger, more informative ScreenTips provide help concerning commands, and the command tabs themselves are context-sensitive, changing automatically depending upon the task that you are trying to complete, so you won’t waste time figuring out the appropriate command. With it you can even search handwritten notes, the text in images and scanned documents, and spoken words in audio recordings.

    Preview Changes and Spot Trends
Home and Student 2007 saves you time by making it easier to format your Office documents with Live Preview. This tool lets you quickly preview proposed changes to your document while you’re working on it without having to repeatedly search through layers of menus. Taking a look at your proposed formatting before committing to it lets you experiment without risk and can help minimize future edits. Excel features highly visual conditional formatting with new data bars, more colorful gradients, and icons that you can use to format data based on specific rules, so you can more easily identify key data trends, which can help you study and prepare written papers or reports.

Create and Save Custom Slide Layouts
PowerPoint lets you create presentations with ease using prebuilt and user-defined custom slide layouts. With the custom layout feature you can quickly create the precise layout you envision without being bound by one of the prepackaged, standard layouts. You can then save your custom layout for use in future presentations.

    Broader Distribution of Your Documents
Home and Student 2007’s features aren’t limited to the work you do at home; they extend to broader distribution of your documents and presentations. New support for Portable Document Format (PDF) and XML Paper Specification (XPS) file formats helps ensure increased distribution and sharing of your documents with users on any platform. This is particularly ideal for either sharing documents with friends and families, or for presenting information and assignments in a computer-integrated class.

I love this product! It’s great for those of us that need to attend college and whatnot. Although OpenOffice is free, Microsoft is better quality.
