Well, you shook me for a few horrifying seconds, anyway– I set the clock, then the alarm for two minutes later. Clipped the clock onto the bottom of my pillow inside the pillow case. Laid down and looked over the packaging and instructions (even though the clock is simple enough you don’t need the instructions). Then the thing surprised me with the massive vibration that made it seem like the house was coming down. Even given that I was expecting it, it still really jolted me. I imagine if you snuck this into someone’s bed as a prank, you could kill them with the shock of it. Pros: Easy to set and use, really shakes you up. Comes with batteries installed- sweet! Cons: The audible alarm isn’t loud at all. It is quieter than a regular alarm for sure, and is of course especially muffled if its under you pillow. (But the vibration ought to wake you up every time by itself)

National Treasure 2 - Book of Secrets (Widescreen)
Less engrossing than its 2004 predecessor National Treasure, Jon Turteltaub’s busy sequel National Treasure: Book of Secrets is nevertheless a colorful and witty adventure, another race against overwhelming odds for the answer to a historical riddle. Ben Gates (Nicolas Cage), the treasure hunter who feverishly sought, in the first film, the whereabouts of a war chest hidden by America’s forefathers, is now charged with protecting family honor. When a rival (Ed Harris) offers alleged proof that Gates’ ancestor, Thomas Gates, was not a Civil War-era hero but a participant in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Ben and his father (Jon Voight) and crew (Justin Bartha, Diane Kruger) hopscotch through Paris, London, Washington DC, and South Dakota to gather evidence refuting the claim. The film is most fun when the hunt, as in National Treasure, squeezes Ben into such impossible situations as examining twin desks in the queen’s chambers in Buckingham Palace and the White House’s Oval Office, or kidnapping an American president (Bruce Greenwood) for a few minutes of frank talk. Helen Mirren, the previous year’s Oscar winner for Best Actress, wisely joins the cast of a likely hit film as Ben’s archaeologist mother, long-estranged from Voight’s character but as feisty as the rest of the family. Returning director Turteltaub takes excellent advantage of his colorful backdrops in European capitals and the always-eerie Mount Rushmore, and oversees some wildly imaginative sets for this dramedy’s feverish third act in an audacious and completely unexpected, legendary setting. Customer Review: Fun romp
The writers scoured American history for another blend of adventure and historical fiction.

All the familiar characters are back, and they do a great job at picking up a few years later. The interplay between characters is great, as is the addition of Ed Harris as the nemesis. He brings a combination of threat and sympathy to his role.

I had low expectations for this, and was pleasantly surprised. So much so that I look forward to whatever they come up with for the next adventure.

Customer Review: One of the best games there is.
Even though Clock Tower 3 is a little too long, it’s still one of the best games I’ve played yet, except maybe for ‘Haunting Ground’. I’ve been trying for about 5 years to beat the last boss fight between Alyssa and her Grandfather but never have succeeded. I would love to finish the game but the last battle is the hardest one I’ve seen in any video game. And also, it looks like the game designers could make the main character’s clothes and skin to gradually become more smudged as the game goes along, but instead, at the end of the game, the main player still looks like he/she is ready to go out dancing even after wading through sewers and battling enemies and getting thrown around all over the place. CT3 is more exciting than ‘Resident Evil’ because the enemies in this game, as in ‘Haunting Ground’, chases you from one area or room to another, but in RE when you meet up with enemies, you can just leave the room and they cannot follow. Another thing I like about the game is, alyssa moves at the same speed all through the game, so there’s no need to press two buttons to make her run, just the left analog stick is all. Hope there’s a ‘Clock Tower 4′ in the future.

Customer Review: Giant Scissors = Horror Abounding
I’ll start off with the cons of the game: bad voice acting and dialogue. How bad? Just think of Barry from RE and his “Jill Sandwich” comment, and you get the picture. I also wish that they included a skip-scene feature like the one in part 2; hearing it again when replaying the game is annoying, but not a serious problem. Now, why did I give five-stars? Two words: terror factor. This game did a great job of giving me chills every time I came across Scissorman. “But he literally limps after you!”, you say. Yes, he does chase you at a low speed, but if anything, this enhances the creepiness: it’s as if Scissorman thinks that killing you is nothing more than a fun game of tag. But don’t think it will be easy- Scissorman is not the only enemy, and as one reviewer said, there are “dead-ends” in this game. The music and sound effects add to the horror: each time Scissorman appears, the foreboding music kicks in, and each “clang” of his scissors will send chills through you. Scissorman is also notorious for appearing unexpectedly, such as leaping out through a painting. I love these random events, because it throws in suspense. The game has several different endings, and what you do can affect who will live and who dies. Gameplay is adventure styled, with click-and-point controls- controls that don’t take long to get used to. Overall, this a horror gaming classic that should be at least rented (unless you absolutely detest adventure-like games).

I first bought this game at the swapmeet about 8 years ago and my ex boyfriend stole it from me. With a passion, I actually thought about murder when I found out he stole it. After having bought it again, I am totally happy that I get to play it again. This game is awesome in an old nineties sort of way. If you like your horror gaming, you’ll love this game! Customer Review: A wonderful book by James Thurber in a beautiful new edition
I was astonished to receive the summer list from The New York Review Children Collection and to find this extraordinary book by James Thurber. He wore gloves when he was asleep, and he wore gloves when he was awake, which made it difficult for him to pick up pins or coins or the kernels of nuts, or to tear the wings from nightingales.” Neil Gaiman’s Introduction was so good and so loving I had to read more, and I found this entry from November 2001 on his blog: “So I’m reading James Thurber’s “The 13 Clocks” to my daughter right now. “I mentioned the fun I was having reading the book to American friends, expecting a chorus of “yes, it was our favourite book as children” and got nothing but blank looks and people shifting uncomfortably in their chairs. [I would have shifted just as uncomfortably three weeks ago.] … “To my surprise, and to my dismay, I discovered that it’s more or less out of print (there’s a hardback that may be in print, but Amazon have it listed as unavailable and won’t let you order it), and even the rare bookfinder services don’t have any Ronald Searle illustrated copies. Which leaves me perfectly gobsmacked. I mean, it’s one of the great kids’ books of the last century. It may be the best thing Thurber ever wrote. It’s certainly the most fun that anybody can have reading anything aloud (I’m doing the Duke as Peter Sellers doing Olivier doing Richard III, and the Golux as Marty Feldman). If I ever wrote something half as good I’d be over the moon. Customer Review: one of the cutest books
I had not heard of James Thurber (I’m not from Northern America :)) until one of my friends on a study abroad program brought this book to our apartment and we started reading it out loud to each other. I loved it so much that I’ve read it three times already. Thurber’s playing with the language is so amazing, cute and fascinating that it makes you speak “his way” after you read the book. And all his ideas are wonderful! This all makes the book one of a kind, really.

Customer Review: Mop works great!
I have a tiled entryway and a laminate kitchen, dining room floor. Lots of square feet to clean. I have a bad back and a mop you have to put pressure on makes mopping the floor a real chore. Not so with the Bissell steam mop. It cleans like a dream, more like pushing a vacuum cleaner around than actually mopping. As others noted you shouldn’t let the floor get too grimy before cleaning it, but that isn’t a problem since the Bissell makes such short and easy work out of cleaning it. Also, if you have soap, etc on your floor from cleaning it previously, the floor will streak the first few times you use the Bissell, but when you eliminate all the soap it’s fine. Great little mop for both tile and laminate floors.

Sophie seemed concerned for a minute, but then lost interest. We let her get used to the sound of the Dremel for a few minutes, then got down to business. We expected her to cringe and pull away when we took paw in hand, for what usually follows is not pleasant for her. She submitted reluctantly at first to the Dremel, probably expecting the worst, but once we distracted her with a piece of rawhide, she forgot about the nail hubbub and let us carry on.

The whole thing was quick and painless, which made a change for Sophie, and was actually kind of soothing for the humans, which definitely made a change for us.

We followed the advice in the manual and alternated between two paws at a time, not keeping the abrasive on any nail for more than a couple of seconds, and we made sure each nail was cool before grinding it a second time.

If we had a criticism, it would be to wish only that Dremel would include the ?-inch drum for larger dogs like Sophie as well as the smaller one. Other than that, it’s a tail-wagger. –Kris Jensen-Van Heste

First of all, using the Dremmel Pet Grooming tool is a lot less stress on me. I always have the fear of clipping into the quick while using clippers. Overall the tool is fast and painless. The only obstical to overcome is getting my dog to sit still when the motor starts.

I’ve used this twice, and really, for the price, it’s a nifty little tool. I had originally looked at the peticure, but read reviews about the battery not lasting long, plus it costs twice as much. Thought I’d try this and it works great-especially if using rechargeable batteries. I know I didn’t want a cord, and the batteries in a rechargeable unit will eventually wear out. This is great-if it runs down, you can pop in charged batteries and it keeps going.

I’m sure you can pay twice as much and get a better unit, but at least for me and my little chihuahua/terrier, this one does the job.

I bought this book to learn about dining table construction. The instructions are clear and concise and includes ALL the steps required to make 9 tables. Kim Carleton Graves is obviously a very good teacher and it really comes across in this book. I found this book a great learning aid and I’m sure I will refer to it time and time again. Please publish a book on chairs.
Customer Review: Just what you need if your going to build a dining table
Dining room tables are different in complexity than smaller tables, so its apropos that Taunton chose to put these tables in a separate book from their Tables book. I have both, and have built projects out of both. The Dining Table book deals has a nice layout and design section in the beginning where it describes the minimum and ideal dimensions for tables built for certain numbers of people. The book contains a nice selections of projects, including a trestle table (pictured on the front cover), a shaker style kitchen table (which I built), various expandable tables, and a boat table constructed using a torsion box. I would also recommend reading the Tables book by Taunton, as it has a dining room table designed by Frank Klausz which is awesome.

Customer Review: Great Faucet and Even Better Price!
This faucet typically costs a lot more money if I tried to buy this at Home Depot or Lowes. I actually tried going to those places to find out how much this faucet was. By far this was the lowest price I have seen this faucet sold. What makes it even better is the quality of the faucet. They have price pfister “no leak” ceramic valves and the faucets look beautiful to match my other brushed and satin nickel bathroom accessories. If you are renovating your bathroom you should strongly consider this faucet or anything similar from Price Pfister or Delta Faucet. I would consider those companies balance style, affordability, and quality very well.

We purchased the scarecrow to stop the Blue Heron’s from eating our Koi fish in our pond. We tried an owl, plastic heron (moved to different locations frequently) and nothing worked. I use three Sarecrows to protect my garden. One morning I forgot to turn off the water. The blast from one of the “crows’ caused me to drop everything i was carrying and scamper out of the garden. it startled the tar out of me!

Only negative so far is battery life is about 1 month. I am now trying rechargeable batteries.

We had the opportunity to chat with Sophie Uliano over e-mail about Gorgeously Green, her suggestions for saving the Earth, and the very real possibility of becoming a hippie. Here’s what Sophie had to say about the economics of eco-consciousness, the allure of non-toxic nail polish, and of course, whether it’s truly easy being green.

Amazon.com: I’ve heard a common complaint that energy-saving light bulbs, organic food and clothing, and other “green” products are not as economical as traditional products. Is that true? Any tips for readers who want to be eco-conscious and budget-conscious too?

Sophie Uliano: I think that going green has a double meaning in that it also is about saving money. There is no way that I would or could go green if it meant that I was going to have to pay much more. If you make the cleaning spray that I suggest in my book, you will save a bunch on cleaning supplies because it’s an all-purpose cleaner that I use on almost everything (a great germ-buster too). You will pay a little more upfront for energy-saving light bulbs, but as they last 15 times longer, you will save money in the long run. Food is the only thing that you may have to pay a bit more for, however, I think that your health is an important investment, so I choose to save on boring cleaning supplies and treat my family to food that not only tastes more delicious, but will keep them healthy and vibrant. Remember that if you follow all the energy-saving tips in the book, you are going to save a wad of cash too–so it’s a win/win.

Amazon.com: I think many people are interested in making more sustainable choices, but when it comes to the heavy lifting it can be hard to break old habits. We tend to think, “Someone else will ride their bike to work today–I’ll drive like I always do.” What advice do you have that can help people “walk the talk”?

Uliano: I agree that it is hard to break old habits. My suggestion is to break one habit at a time. Choose the one thing that bothers you most. For me it is using paper towels when I know that I can easily use a rag instead. Make a decision about the change you want to make and tell your friends and family that you have decided to do this one thing and that you want their support. It could be that you are going to cook one organic meal from scratch once a week, or that you are going to air-dry your clothes this summer or simply that you will wash out a barely used zip-lock bag, instead of throwing it away–easy!

Amazon.com: Furthermore, I’ve heard many people worry that eco-consciousness is the first step toward becoming a granola hippie, to use one of your own phrases from the book. Do you have to be a hippie to go green?

Uliano: You so don’t have to become the tree hugger/hippie to live a green way of life. I feel passionately that you can still have the glitz, the glam and the gleaming house because now there are so many eco-friendly companies that offer you safe and healthy choices: nail polishes, organic clothes that are fabulous to name a few.

Amazon.com: Not everyone lives in an area where green options are available and accessible. Can you suggest a few ways that readers can live a greener lifestyle even if they don’t have easy access to car-sharing companies, wet dry-cleaners, and other alternatives you mention in your book?

Uliano: If you don’t have easy access to some of the green options in my book, it really doesn’t matter. No matter where you live, you can make a start. I recently visited my in-laws in Georgia, who have fewer options than we do here in Los Angeles; however, they have embarked on making their own cleaners, composting, growing veggies etc. There’s advantages to living in a metropolitan city in that you can buy all the great eco-stuff, but if you live in a more rural setting, it’s fantastic too because you may have a yard in which you can grow tomatoes or air-dry your laundry. I’d pick the latter if given the choice!

Amazon.com: Your book is mainly directed toward female readers–what tips do you have for men who are interested in making sustainable lifestyle changes?

Uliano: I wrote my book for women because I realized that as a mom, wife and working girl I could show like-minded women how easy it is to become green, however, men can totally benefit from my book too! My husband doesn’t have a huge interest in non-toxic nail polish, but he’s fascinated with everything solar and has started biking everywhere. We work together as a team, inspiring each other with our daily green discoveries–it’s fun!

Customer Review: I wanted to like this book….
I wanted to like this book, I really did. I found it to be very cute, but a bit of a puff piece.

There’s alot of tid bits of information, but nothing substantial. Some information is conflicting - on one page Sophie says she avoids microwaves and doesn’t want it altering the molecules in her food. Yet, on another page, she writes that the microwave is the most eco-friendly way to cook, as it uses the least amount of energy.

And yoga sun salutations and exercise instructions don’t belong in a green guide. They just don’t!

I also purchased Easy Green Living by Renee Loux and found it to be much more substantial and informative - like a mini encyclopedia on what you need to do to live green.

It took awhile for this book to catch my interest. I am not sure I understood the ending, but was eager to find out how the story ended. My expectations were probably too high because I expected more out of the book. However, I have recommended this book to a friend. I liked the blending of historical fiction and a fairy tale. Customer Review: Couldn’t even get through it
I read Confessions and Wicked and liked both of them okay, but to me this one was just meandering through nothingness and it seemed pointless. Where was the plot? What was the plot? Who were these characters and why should I care about them? None of these questions were even remotely answered. Each chapter gave little snippets of practically random information and then moved on to the next snippet. The pieces never came together and never meant anything and after forcing myself to read chapter after chapter with nothing still happening or none of the pieces being put together I finally quit. Why go on struggling when there are a million other great books to spend my time on? Sorry, this one did not cut it for me.

Whenever I hear these singles on the radio, I want to gouge my ears with an ice pick just so I never have to hear another Nickelback song. Customer Review: A perfect hard-drive enclosure!
This is an excellent product, with a first-class design, both in its operation and in its classy appearance. It has a very small footprint in the vertical position. I have it sitting on a 1/2 inch styrofoam pad, which I do as a matter of course with drives of this sort in order to lessen any vibration effects. However, there are none at all; it is impossible, either by sound or feel, to detect that the drive is running. It was very easy to install a 500gb Seagate Barracuda SATA drive, which of course required formatting before use. After formatting, the drive worked as expected, with no fussing or fiddling. Most important, the fan-less aluminum enclosure runs very cool. The warmest surface temperature which I measure using a laser spot thermometer (in an ambient surrounding of 75 degrees F) is 95 degrees F. All pros and no cons!!

What is the Bioelectrical Impedance Method?
Bioelectrical Impedance (BI) is considered one of the most accurate and accessible methods of screening body fat. Muscles, blood vessels and bones are body tissues having a high water content that conduct electricity easily. Body fat is tissue that has little electric conductivity. The monitor sends an extremely weak electrical current through your body to determine the amount of fat tissue. The weak electrical current is not felt while operating the Body Fat Analyzer. The monitor is calculated by a formula that includes five factors; electric resistance, height, weight, age and gender.
What is visceral fat?
Visceral fat is located around the organs. Too much visceral fat is thought to be closely linked to increased level of fat in the bloodstream, which can lead to common conditions such as high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Sedentary life style causes excess visceral fat, and exercise can reduce it quicker than subcutaneous fat (fat located under skin).
What is resting metabolism?

Customer Review: A good buy, especially for the price
$30 shipped to your door. It’s hard to find a decent watch at Walmart for $30 - just think about that.

This thing works, it’s simple, yes, but it does what it’s supposed to do. It doesn’t record any data, upload it to your pc, or do anything other than report your heart rate. For those of you who want detailed data, avg. hr, max hr. then this unit is not for you.

I run a lot of hills and believe that my avg. hr. would be misleading given that my hr. tends to drop into the low aerobic zone down hill and will climb into the 90%-100% range on the hardest incline. I suppose if you’re running on a flat track then the avg. would be a good way of measuring the hr you spent most of your time at. The max hr function would be helpful only for those who are testing themselves to find their max. When I tested myself I pretty much knew when to check the watch.

I find the reading to be very stable while running - I have never seen a blip of 0 or 260 or anything unusual - the reading is always very stable and moves around by 5bpm or so on a flat grade. The monitor has a heart in the upper right corner of the display that seems to flash when it’s receiving a reading, if it stops flashing that that seems to indicate that the watch is no longer receiving a signal. It’s easy to set the high and low thresholds and when you are above or below your set zone an arrow appears above or below the heart to indicate that you’re too high or too low. The watch can beep when you’re out of your zone but I don’t use this function given that I’m usually listening to music while running. The readings seem to fluctuate much more before I start my run; my wife is a nurse and has taken my pulse and we find the monitor to be accurate.

The strap is easily adjusted, comfy, and *very* easy to put on. There is no scratchy velcro. I am a thin build (6′1″ 172lbs) and can’t believe there’d be anyone thin enough that the strap would be too large. The unit works ok if you don’t moisten the strips with spit or water but has consistently worked flawlessly if you moisten it before you go. I do have a fairly hairy chest, no apparent interference. I don’t use it at the gym so I don’t know how bad the crosstalk would be with other units.

I am very happy with it, it works as advertised. At $30 it’s a no brainer! I would be tempted to get something like the forerunner 50 that used hr and a foot pod but at $130 that’s just too pricey. For a basic hr monitor this can’t be beat, you are sacrificing some of the fancy bells and whistles but you are not sacrificing quality or functionality - it works flawlessly every time. The watch does have a blue back light, a stopwatch, the date and time. You can easily switch back and forth between any display and the hr monitor with the push of the red button. I find that I only need the stop watch, the time and date seem pointless given that I will only be wearing this watch while running.

My only quibble is that the instructions suggest you base your training zones on a percentage of your max hr. I would advocate that you use the Karvonen Formula that uses the max hr in addition to your resting hr.

Customer Review: Good price, but doesn’t work
I was drawn in by the price, and figured I’d take a chance since the reviews were about 50/50.

The product does not work as many other reviewers stated. My heart rate would read wacky and varied at rest and zero during exercise. And I’m fairly certain that I do have a heartbeat.

I thought it was worth the risk given the low cost. Amazon rocks as usual with returns of unworthy products, however just know going in that you’ll likely end up sending it back. In the end, it was just a big waste of my time and effort.

Despite the huge cost difference, I’ll be moving to the Polar brand (which my boot camp instructor recommends).

Because no matter how cheap you can get something, it’s worth nothing if it doesn’t work.

Customer Review: I was expecting something different.
I must have not read up enough on this product because I thought it was typical Beethoven. It’s not. It’s kid friendly with dummed-down instruments. I’m not sure how that works with babies, but I find it to be a bit dissatisfying. I actually bought this for my dogs. I have never used it.
Customer Review: All synthesized, just terrible…
My wife and I received this CD as part of a set, a gift for our baby-on-the-way. I just started to listen to it. All of the music is synthesized, and at mediocre quality. How’s that enriching for the baby? You never hear the actual instruments, only a synthesizer’s imitation. Better to get a standard collection of classical music, they’re not expensive. They don’t have a cute cartoon animals on the front, but are higher quality, and as soothing.

Considero que Vista es una versi?n de compromiso de Microsoft, como en su momento fue Milenium (alguien se acuerda de este SO?).

En realidad XP Pro es muy superior a Vista en todos los aspectos, pero en especial en la manera libre que deja ejecutar el soft.

Para hacer el Vista “m?s seguro” se lo termin? haciendo muy lento por las ventanas de aprobaci?n que aparecen al ejecutar ?rdenes.

De hecho desinstal? de mi Dell el Vista e instal? XP Pro.

Resumiendo Vista es lento y pesado respecto de XP y no aporta nada nuevo.

Customer Review: Una evolucion, no revolucion
Compre Windows Vista Home Premium hace ya 4 meses para usarlo en casa, y en resumen creo que es una buena evolucion respecto a Windows XP, pero no hay nada revolucionario. Sin duda ademas de la licencia disponga de tiempo y dinero adicional para mejorar un poco el hardware y nuevas versiones de software.

Lo primero es definir la version de Windows: en el paquete viene el Vista Home Premium de 32 bit, pero para aprovechar el 100% del procesador encargue, sin costo, el DVD con la version de 64bit.

Un aspecto clave es el equipo donde se ejecuta: yo poseo un CPU AMD Athlon 64 (754) con 1Gb RAM DDR 400.

Sin embargo consideren que puede ser necesario mejorar un poco su equipo, en especial si no es nuevo. Como muestra les cuento mi caso: el disco duro SATA de 80Gb lo cambie a uno de 160Gb; la tarjeta de video AGP Nvidia GeForce 5200 con WEI (Windows Experience Index) de solo 2.1 me motivo a cambiar la placa madre (otra 754 pero con PCI-e) para instalar Nvidia GeForce 7300LE con WEI 3.2 y 3.8 en ambos test graficos. Finalmente el upgrade costo 220USD$ adicionales.

Hay hardware que no funcionara en caso de no existir drivers WIN VISTA 64 firmados por el fabricante o genericos incluidos en Vista. En mi caso fue un antiguo scaner usb marca Agfa modelo 1212U, al igual que un nuevo fax/modem interno v92 con chipset Intel 537EP.

Nota aparte merece el que Microsoft deshabilito dispositivos antiguos, lo que no esta indicado en la caja ni sitio web de Vista. Por cari?o mantenia una disquetera de 5.25″ de 1.2Mb y a veces utilizaba el puerto serial (COM) para conectar un par de cosas… ahora no puedo.

Respecto al software en si, la navegacion es solida y agradable. No tiene grandes problemas, pero hay detalles menores no solucionados. Si considere que el sucesor de Outlook Express (OE) llamado Windows Mail no fue capaz de importar grandes carpetas de email antiguos OE, por lo que pedi ayuda al call center Microsoft pero el problema no se pudo solucionar en poco tiempo… finalmente decidi no invertir mas tiempo en salvar la correspondencia.

Lamentablemente las funciones de Media Center estan pobremente documentadas y a la fecha la mejor opcion para utilizarlas es comprar una consola de juegos Microsoft X-Box 360 (ahora con 3 a?os de garantia, al menos en USA).

Mi gran decepcion sin embargo no es Windows Vista sino las aplicaciones, dado que a la fecha la mayoria de los fabricantes si bien han sacado nuevas versiones de sus productos compatibles con Vista, es solo a 32bit (compatible con Vista 64bit via modulo WOW 64 incluido en sistema operativo). Un ejemplo basico es Adobe Flash 9.

La falta de compromiso con 64bit es tal que incluso Microsoft programo su Office 2007 solo a 32bit.

Recuerde que como con todo cambio de sistema operativo hay aplicaciones antiguas que no funcionaran, en especial con Vista 64.

A pesar de lo anterior, Vista 32 o 64 bit es superior a XP en casi todos los aspectos, y vale la pena comprarlo.
